Properties Alloy steel is steel which contains other additional elements other than iron and carbon in order to improve the physical and chemical characteristics of the material.The normative defines alloyed steel as being an iron-carbon alloy where at least one of the alloyed elements exceeds the limits stated in the UNI EN 10020. Alloy steels are divided into two categories, low-alloy (no elements above 5%) and high-alloy steel (at least one element above 5%).

Case hardened alloy steels are steels which have undergone the heat treatment process of carburising used to increase the surface hardness of the material while maintaining a soft and tough core.

Tempered alloy steels contain elements of (manganese, chrome, nickel,molybdenum)in varied proportions giving the material the best properties for tempering.
