Properties
Stainless steels (or inox) are alloys of iron and carbon (max 1,2% or 2,6%) characterised by their resistance to corrosion both from the air and high temperatures and from humidity. Thanks to the addition of at least 12% of chromium and other elements, stainless steels form a passive film of chromium oxide (3-5 x 10-7mm)preventing any further corrosion by blocking oxygen diffusion to the steel surface and so to the internal structure. The high resistance and mechanical properties of this type of steel make it ideal for architectural use, particularly in harsh environments where high resistance is required like chemical plants, marine structures and offshore oil rigs.
Stainless steels can be supplied in their original rolled state or annealed, normalized, tempered or solubilised.
