Properties Tool steels are often used to produce products where the precise level of stress the object will be subdued to is hard to define. Depending on the use, the main characteristics required from these steels are; a good cutting edge, durability,resistance to abrasion and a resistance to deformation at elevated temperatures. Tool steels are divided into: cold working types, intended for use below 200° C. Hot working types, intended for use between 450-600° C. High speed steels, used for tools where strength and hardness must be retained at temperatures up to and exceeding 760° C.
